I will probably be off for two more weeks. My parents, whom I haven’t seen in a year, are coming for two weeks. I also have a lot of work to do to help my husband get ready for his new Currclick classes. Teaching those classes is such a great job! A few of his students sent him Christmas presents all the way overseas! Some students got together and made French 1 t-shirts and sent him one. Those are the kind of students you want!

My new favorite online toy is a puzzle maker, PuzzleFast. You type in the words once and then can print out or (I like even better) do online word searches, unscramble and crossword puzzles. Nice for vocab and spelling.

I’ve also been making online games with this fun site, class tools.  You just type in the question and answer. Save. Then you have a webpage with a game on it. It doesn’t save the link for you anywhere. Bookmark the page or save the link to your page somewhere. My kids love playing the games I’ve made. At the top of the list is an arcade creator. That’s the best for games. There are also many online graphic organizers you could use.

One thing we deal with a lot as people who use free things is ads. I wanted to let you know that sometimes you can do something about the ads. At sheppard software I contacted them about an ad that I thought was inappropriate for a children’s educational site, and they had it down within the hour. I was really impressed with them. You can help all of us by reporting (or trying to report) inappropriate ads. Unfortunately, Google controls the majority of ads. As far as I can tell, they have no way of reporting something as offensive. There is a little triangle at the top right of ads that says “Ad Choices.” You can “manage your preferences.” Now, I changed my preferences to like home and garden and (I hope you won’t think I’m evil, I’m just trying to protect my kids) I put my age as 65+ :)  The only problem is that it doesn’t listen to you. It constantly readjusts itself to what websites you go to. I have edited my preferences any time I start seeing things I don’t like. Our biggest problem is my son is learning to program online games. He’s gone to tutorial websites and Google registers his interest in online games. You know how awful those online game ads can be.

Yahoo has a profile where you can change yourself to be a 70-year-old man. That gets rid of all the diet ads with girls in bikinis :)  Microsoft has an easy way to report an ad as offensive, but as far as I can tell reporting it does nothing.

Fortunately for You has A Christmas Carol ebook. I’m not sure what the difference is between this and what’s available online. This and all classic literature is available always. I usually go to archive.org to search for books, but there are many, many places online.

Speaking of which, I just ordered from Amazon.com my very own cookbook. I didn’t put it up for sale I just put our recipes in a Word document, saved it as a pdf, and submitted it to Amazon.com’s create space program. I ordered a few “proofs”of my work for a few dollars each. I will have for Christmas bound cookbooks for myself and couple family members. Create Space is what I used when I published my novel, which by the way would make a great Christmas present ;)

We started our advent calendar today. My daughter made it from matchboxes. She made each one look like a present and numbered them. We hot glued them to a green poster board in a Christmas tree shape. In each box I wrote a Scripture reference and then put a little candy for each kid in each box. The candy keeps everyone nice and quiet while we read the verses. The kids love advent!

On the American History page I’ve added a new Iroquois Indian lapbook and Colonial America lapbook. They aren’t listed in the curriculum, so I thought I’d mention them. New options…

Right now I’m working on 20th century history. I’m making timeline minibooks that I’ll share when I’m done. I’ve made it to WWII so far. And that’s how far I’ve gotten in the curriculum I’m building. I hope some of you will be able to use it, though it’s years from being completely done. At the end of this school year, one year will be done of history, science, Bible, art, music, computer and PE/health. Also 1st, 4th and 6th grade will be done. It’s been super for us. School is just waiting on the computer. They just have to sit down, find what day they are on and go through the activities. Speaking of which, I need to go work on it now :) I have been keeping 6 weeks ahead of my kids in my planning. I don’t want to get behind!
